African-American leaders petition the Massachusetts legislature to erect a monument to Crispus Attucks.

(March) Lewis Hayden, William Cooper Nell, Joshua Smith present the petition. While Attucks death is celebrated annually beginning in 1858,* a monument is not erected until 1888.*
